10pm Sat 13 Dec 792kHz: Tibet2Timbuk2 on Weekend Planet

Hi folks,

Shen's News: I've finally caught up on blogging my last couple of gigs:
Tibet2Timbuk2 CD Launch @ Brisbane Powerhouse (lovely photos of a lovely gig) and the BEMAC 21st Anniversary Gala Concert, where I played with my new jazz-world group Jaadu.

I've also been hard at work publicising Tibet2Timbuk2's new CD "Music is Life" recently. The award-winning "Crane Song" is on the latest C-Realm episode - good listen that - which has generated a few downloads in USA. And you can hear Tibet2Timbuk2 on Weekend Planet (ABC Radio National) this Saturday between 10pm-11pm. It's a great CD, so please check it out
at the EthnoSuperLounge Shop. Proceeds go to support Tibetan Children's Village.

This is looking like my last email for the year, so I want to wish you all a very happy festive season, solstice, Christmas, New Year, and so on. I will be with my family in Perth from Dec 17 to Jan 3. No Woodford for me this year - if you're talking to influential people, please tell them they're crazy not to book Tibet2Timbuk2! In January I hope to be giving double lessons to all my students, before I head to India Jan 25 to March 24! :-) Very exciting!!! After that I'm hoping to bring bansuri player Taro Terahara over for the second half of April.

Happy New Year!!!

Tue 25 Nov West End: Shubhendra Rao (sitar) & Ty Burhoe (tabla)

Hi folks,

Shen's News: I've been super-busy with the blogging in the last few days, and have finally caught up on all the stories from my packed final month in Japan. I've written about my
Greenhouse sojourn including the Lakshmi Party, Tokyo concerts with Taro Terahara and Atsuko Maeda (Kathak dance), a concert in Niigata with Taro Terahara, 10 days touring Kyushu with Hide Iwai (sitar), an mbira session in Sasayama, and an unexpected concert on my last night in Osaka with Gina Sala (healing vocals). I've written all the thank yous to many many people in Japan Tour 2008: Acknowledgements.

And I've announced the fact that the
new CD by Tibet2Timbuk2 "Music is Life" is available online now. It's a great CD, please check it out at the EthnoSuperLounge Shop. Proceeds go to support Tibetan Children's Village.

I don't have any concerts organised for the next while, but I especially want to announce
Tuesday's concert in West End by Shubhendra Rao (sitar) & Ty Burhoe (tabla). I have seen Shubhendra Rao performing in Varanasi and I highly recommend listening to his sitar. His accompanist and regular visitor to Australia Ty Burhoe is also an excellent tabla player. Both are disciples of top Indian classical artists Pt. Ravi Shankar (sitar) and U. Zakir Hussain (tabla). They are also performing in Bangalow on Thursday.

Mal Webb in town and T2T2 CD launch

Hi folks,

Shen's News:
I've really been enjoying allowing myself to be free of all this computer work in the last month in Japan. I've had some great gigs and other adventures, from Tokyo and Niigata to Kyushu in western Japan before returning to Kyoto and Osaka for the flight home. I'll do my best to blog those stories in the next few days.....

But first I want to announce the long-awaited launch of Tibet2Timbuk2's new CD, "Music is Life" on Saturday November 15 at the Brisbane Powerhouse. It's a great CD with some new never-before heard tracks which we'll be performing on the night, with
surprise special guests. Unbelievably, T2T2 didn't get into Woodford (again!) this year, and with Tenzin and Marcello both being busy with other projects I imagine this will be our last show for the year. We're really excited about playing at the Powerhouse, and I hope you will come and share the moment! You can get tickets online through the CD sponsors, Perfect Potion.

BTW you can catch a sneak preview of a (highly MP3ed)
new song on the C-Realm podcast episode 126.

Sat Nov 15: Tibet2Timbuk2 @ Powerhouse!

Perfect Potion presents Tibet2Timbuk2
Announcing the launch of the new CD "Music is Life"

book your ticket on line now

Perfect Potion proudly presents Tibet2Timbuk2 and their upcoming CD launch. Tibet2Timbuk2 will be appearing at the Brisbane Powerhouse on Saturday 15 th November, 8pm and a percentage of the sale proceeds from the CD Launch night will be donated to Tibetan Children’s Orphanage.

Since their organicoustic world debut, Tibet2Timbuk2 have gone to perform and record eclectic group arrangements, namely Daway Wola, Beautiful Girl and Crane Song, which are all featured in the new CD and sees them the winner of 2008 Q Song Awards’ BEMAC World Music Award.

Tibet2Timbuk2 is collaboratively three talented musicians; Tenzin Choegyal who draws on traditional Tibetan roots, singer-songwriter and guitarist Marcello Milani and free-spirited classical tabla player Shen Flindell. Together, they share bass, percussion, harmony and melody roles to create a solid yet easy groove. And while Tibet2Timbuk2 perform as a three piece, they say they do like to invite soloists to join them. Regular guest artists, Taro Terahara (bansuri - Indian bamboo flute), Peter Hunt (trumpet) and Lansana Camara (kora ? African harp) also have collaborated on recordings with Tibet2Timbuk2 on their new CD.

It comes as no surprise when Brisbane-based certified natural and aromatherapy skin care company, Perfect Potion, decided to support Tibet2Timbuk2. As a commitment to the community and its team members, Marcello (who also commits his time to working at Perfect Potion) and Sal and Carolyn (the owners) collaborated to support the launch and production of the new CD.

On the night, audiences will be taken on a journey from the meditative to the joyous with music blends that are full and organic. And the team at Perfect Potion, will be there, with the focus clearly on celebrating Tibet2Timbuk2’s success to date.

Thu 25 Sep New Farm: Purbayan Chatterjee's Shastriya Syndicate (Light)

Hi folks,

Shen's News:
I've had a great time in the last 2 weeks, starting with a little show at Ayuttaya Cafe with Nobi (sitar) and another at the World Flutes Festival (Kobe) with Taro Terahara (bansuri). But the absolute highlight was definitely the Gifu Sangeet Mela 2008 - the best ever!!! It's such a great event, bringing together musicians, dancers and Indian music lovers from all around the country. I really hope some day we can have a similar event in Australia. As well as a report and lots of photos, I've uploaded Gifu Sangeet Mela videos to Youtube (15 minutes). Highly recommended!

I also highly recommend
Purbayan Chatterjee's Shastriya Syndicate (Light) at Judith Wright Centre on Thursday.

I really need some help adding events to the ESL events calendar!
I've had no response to this since my last email which I take to mean that this work is not valued. No problem, I'm thinking of scaling these emails back anyway. But if you'd like to give some energy to open source community publicity of world music in our region, please get in touch.

Sun 14 Sep Windsor: Harvest Festival 2008

Hi folks,

Shen's News: Having a blast in Japan, playing with so many different musicians every week. The Indian classical community here is so broad. I'm also loving the summertime cold noodles and the visits to onsens (hot spring baths).... Here are some blog posts from my recent concerts:
Yasuhiro Minamizawa in Ayabe, Mari Komuro (santoor) in Osaka, Ei-Un-In Temple with Carlos Guerra (bansuri) and Yuji Nakagawa (sarangi), Pangea Cafe with Nobi. Coming up this weekend I'm playing with Taro Terahara at the World Flutes Festival in Kobe and then on Sunday I'll be playing at the annual all-night Gifu Sangeet Mela - 3 sitar players, santoor, bansuri (Taro), violin, 5 tabla players, pakhawaj, ghatam, 2 Kathak dancers, 4 Bharat Natyam dancers and a Taiko group!

I really need some help adding events to the ESL events calendar! I've tried so many times to encourage the musicians and promoters to add their events themselves but they're just not biting. Perhaps my website and email list are not worth the effort.... But if you would like to give 10 minutes here and there to add events to the calendar, and help to keep building this community, please get in touch.

Tibet2Timbuk2 wins QSong World Music Award!

Hi folks,

Shen's News:
I have lots of exciting news this week. First up, the Inaugural Ashu Babu Memorial Tabla School Concert was a big success. All the kids played so well and there was a wonderful atmosphere of love and happiness. Full report and photos here.

Secondly, Tibet2Timbuk2's Crane Song WON the 2008 QSong World Music Award on Tuesday night!!! This is great recognition for a great combo, not to mention the handy cash prize. Please set aside Nov 15/16 in your diaries for our CD launch at the Powerhouse.

As I'm leaving for Japan next Thursday, I don't have any gigs here until November (apart from 10am-12 Friday in the Qld Govt Pavilion at the Ekka with Tenzin). But I'll try to keep you posted on what's happening around town in the world music scene.

Sat 9 Aug Sunnybank: Inaugural Ashu Babu Memorial Tabla School Concert

Hi folks,

Shen's News: Tibet2Timbuk2 had two fun gigs and some great recordings over the weekend, including a song with Lansana Camara on kora (who you can check out at Pulse this Friday). It looks like we'll have a 65 minute, 10 track CD, with a wide variety of heart-warming world sounds. We are playing at the QSong awards this Tuesday, and hoping to win the world music category for our song White Crane.

If you like tabla (and surely you do if you're on my email list), please come along to my first ever student concert: the Inaugural Ashu Babu Memorial Tabla School Concert
in Sunnybank Community Hall from 6pm til 8.30 on Saturday night. There will be 11 of my students aged 6 to 18 performing tabla solos, culminating in my own full-length tabla solo.

On the eve of the Beijing Olympics Dendy Cinema is screening of the documentary film "Tibet's Cry for Freedom" , featuring music by Tenzin Choegyal (both the film soundtrack and live on the night). Proceeds to the Good Fortune Trust, supporting Buddhist nuns and monks in Tibet.

Last two Tibet2Timbuk2 shows til November

Hi folks,

Shen's News: Tibet2Timbuk2 (Australia's leading Tibetan reggae bollywood country acoustic rock band) have two shows this week - firstly on Saturday night at the
Burma Relief Concert in Kurilpa Hall, West End, then on Sunday morning at the Dutton Park Folk and Cultural Festival. We've been creating and recording some great new songs lately and really "tightening up our act". These are our last public gigs until November, so don't miss out!

Advance shout-out for next Thursday: On the eve of the Beijing Olympics Dendy Cinema is screening of the documentary film "Tibet's Cry for Freedom" , featuring music by Tenzin Choegyal (both the film soundtrack and live on the night). Proceeds to the Good Fortune Trust, supporting Buddhist nuns and monks in Tibet.
