If you missed Woodford, or enjoyed them and would like to hear them playing in a more focused intimate setting, please come to our concert at The Light House on Sat Jan 5 (they're also performing Jan 4 in Ocean Shores).

Coming up on Jan 26/27 (Indian Republic Day/Australia Day long weekend) we have "United Nations of Indian Classical Music" featuring 7 great artists in Mullumbimby and Brisbane. We're bringing brilliant tabla player Maharshi Raval up from Sydney especially to join all the other very talented musicians on the bill. Please help spread the word!!!

Meanwhile this Sunday Taro and I will join sitarist Saikat Bhattacharya for Swara Mohini's end of year concert in Sunnybank.

Hi folks,

Tibet2Timbuk2 have been having a blast touring Sunshine Coast and central NSW the last two weeks. Our special guest Taro Terahara adds a magical final element to complete a delicious and heady brew of sounds from Tibet, India and further west. Our tour closes this weekend with shows in Gold Coast on Friday, Nimbin on Saturday, and Ocean Shores on Sunday. Hope to see all you NNSW and Gold Coast folks there!

I also want to encourage Brisbane folks to go see Jaadu with Taro Terahara at the Judith Wright Centre this Thursday. Our home concert last Sunday was really enjoyable, smooth and cruisy.

This weekend in Woombye, Oxley, Myocum: Bamboo Bliss - Indian classical flute home concerts with Taro and Shen

Hi folks,

Thanks to everyone who came and enjoyed the sublime sarod concert by Steve Oda and Ty Burhoe at The Light House last Saturday. This week we have another beautiful Indian classical home concert on in Oxley, with  bansuri master Taro Terahara here in Brisbane on Sat 10th. We are also performing in Sunshine Coast (Fri Nov 9) and Byron (Sun 11th)

Later this month we'll be going on tour with Tibet2Timbuk2. Unfortunately there are no shows in Brisbane but you will be able to catch us in Doonan, Chenrezig, Nerang, Nimbin and Ocean Shores - details at tibet2timbuk2.com

Please note that contrary to prior announcements, Tenzin, Taro and I will not be performing with Ani Choying Drolma in her shows next week. The organisers have decided to bring two musicians from Melbourne on the whole tour, which will no doubt be divine.

Sun Oct 21 Westlake: Tamil Saraswati Puja home concert featuring tabla students of ABMTS

Hi folks,

This Sunday we will have a devotional home concert in Westlake from 3pm, as part of Navratri ("Nine Nights of the Goddess"). There will be 3 items with all tabla accompaniment provided by my students or myself. The final item will be a Dhrupad vocal performance by Yuki, which will be your last chance to hear her before she goes back to Japan next week to await her Australian visa. Please contact me for the address if you'd like to come.

Coming up, I'll be hosting some great Indian classical musicians at our home in Oxley - senior student of sarod maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Sri Steve Oda, with student of tabla master Ustad Zakir Hussain, Sri Ty Burhoe. These are big names and along with that goes genuine quality musicianship and devotion. I highly recommend their early afternoon concert on Saturday Nov 3. They are also performing in Byron on the 2nd and around Australia - flier attached.

Then we have bansuri master Taro Terahara here from Japan for 3 months, up until Festival of Tibet in early February 2013. We're starting with a round of Indian classical home concerts in Sunshine Coast (Fri Nov 9), Brisbane (Sat 10th) and Byron (Sun 11th).

This Saturday! Amazing Butoh, Odissi Dance events

Hi folks,

There are some special dance events going on in Brisbane this weekend. This Saturday afternoon, Yuki and Megan are presenting their last BUTOH and Oki-do Workshop of the year
at our studio in Oxley, and this time I'll be providing some live music on... piano! Yes I've been practising lots of classical and some jazz piano pieces in the last couple of months, so let's see what happens...

Then on Saturday night there is the first performance at the new QLD Multicultural Centre in Kangaroo Point, entitled "Intensely Soul - Transformational Odissi Dance". Odissi dance is my favourite form of Indian classical dance, very beautiful and feminine, so I highly recommend this concert and the workshop the following morning. I'm attaching the event flier to this email.

Butoh and Odissi dance events in Brisbane

Hi folks,

There are some special dance events going on in Brisbane in the next month. Yuki is giving weekly butoh dance sessions at our home in Oxley on Thursday evenings in September. For those of you with an image of butoh as an ugly, fearsome dance, please bear in mind that butoh expresses both "light" and "dark". Yuki comes from the "light" side of the butoh tradition as exemplified by Kazuo Ohno, and we would describe these workshops as "sublime dance expression".

Coming up in early October is the first performance at the new QLD Multicultural Centre in Kangaroo Point, entitled "Intensely Soul - Transformational Odissi Dance". Odissi dance is my favourite form of Indian classical dance, very beautiful and feminine, so I highly recommend this concert and the workshop the following morning. I'm attaching the event flier to this email. (Please email me to join my email list.)

This weekend my tabla students and I will be performing at the Gold Coast Multicultural Festival from 1130am, before Tenzin and I head down to Mullumbimby for a small concert there. (Contact Tenzin for details on that one)

I've finally caught up on the last few months' blogging, with posts on our 5th annual tabla school concert, some Tibet2Timbuk2 shows, and the recently completed Masters of Sarangi tour.

“Masters of Sarangi” Concert Tour

7th and 8th generation sarangi masters from the ancient city of Varanasi, Pandit Santosh Mishra and his son Sangeet Mishra will be performing around Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and NNSW with Brisbane's leading classical tabla player Shen Flindell and special guests Yuki Taniguchi Flindell (mantras, Dhrupad) and Shrabani Choudhury (sitar - August 26 only).

Indian classical music is a diamond of global culture, a timeless spiritual vibration with unmatched opportunities for improvisation and expression, transporting listeners into realms of sound. This tour brings together musicians from India, Australia and Japan to evoke the peaceful sounds of Planet Earth.

Sarangi is an Indian bowed instrument with about 50 strings. Its sound is considered to match the human voice most closely, and its name literally means "hundred colours", reflecting the wide range of tones and moods it can evoke. An extremely difficult instrument, the art of sarangi is slowly dying. The sound is that of ancient spiritual India. Santosh and Sangeet Mishra come from a long lineage of sarangi players from India's holiest city, Varanasi, and have performed with leading artists all around India and the world.
