Smt. Rajyashree Josyer Shrikanth is a profound and talented exponent of Carnatic classical music vocal and Veena, which she plays in the delightful Gayaki (i.e. Vocal) style. From a young age, her mother, Veena Vidushi Smt. M.K. Saraswathi has ably trained her in both arts in the legendary GNB and Veene Sheshanna Paramparas.

Sri Sridharan Sankaran had his initial training under Sri Thiruvaaroor Janakiraman under the lineage of Palani Subramaniam Pillai. He had advanced training under mridangam exponent Mannargudi Sri Easwaran. He is an All India Radio Graded artiste, performing since 1986 in various sabhas, AIR and Doordarshan. He has accompanied noted artistes like K.V. Krishnan, Bombay Jayashree, Sikkil Mala Chandrasekhar (Flute), Priya Sisters, Hyderabad Sisters, Prabhavati Ganesan (Veena) and Balaji Shankar.

Papasa is an exciting blend of dance, rhythm & soul of 3 quite diverse African traditions – Ghana, Kenya & Ethiopia. Formed by Ghanaian drummer & dancer Nii Armah & Kenyan singer & dancer Sam Okoth, this African group has a rare & earthy African feel. Musically & in dance, Papasa has a broad dynamic range - from the gentle & soulful syncopated rhythms of the Kenyan ‘Nyatiti’ to the explosive poly-rhythms of Ghana.
Tribalicious
Tribalicious is a fantastically vibrant 11-piece African drum & dance troupe. They perform the full power rhythms & dances of West Africa with such exuberance that you’ll find the word ‘Tribalicious’ as the Oxford dictionary definition for ‘high energy’!! Backed up by a totally rocking rhythm section the Tribalicious dancers capture the attention of any audience, leaving them enlivened and inspired.
This Pulse Tribalicious & Papasa weave together their individual dances & songs, as well as performing as one big fantastic mega-group, strengthening the healthy bonds existing within the Brisbane African drum & dance community. And for all you crazy dancers out there, have no fear, there will be plenty of pumping music dedicated to your dancing feet!!

Hi Friends,
What a journey it has been, it's 9 months since my last event "Joyfest" sent me bankrupt and I have learnt so much. One of those learnings has been to never lose sight of your dream. I still hold strong to help bring community together through beautiful music and for those of you who have had the pleasure to experience Sacred Earth's blissful music you will know what this means.
This event is being held at a delightful venue which only has seating for 200 people so you will need to get your tickets early to be assured a seat. In Africa drumming and dance are ONE, the rhythm and movement inseparable, the one mirrored in the other. These classes are dedicated to understanding this connection. Half of each class focuses upon the drumming. The second half of the class focuses upon the dance, as the rhythm is played by Elliott and friends. Participants are encouraged to learn both or may choose to focus on either side of this union. Course culminates in a performance at the August Pulse.
4 x 2 hour classes over 4 weeks.
Wed nights Aug 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd.

In the spirit of the 2005 Qld Music Festival’s Goodwill Drumming, the Woodford Theatre Company offers this amazing opportunity to participate in an incredible mass drumming performance experience.
Led by Elliott Orr there are 3 different groups, 2 on the Gold Coast and 1 in Brisbane. After 8 weeks of tuition and rehearsal the 3 groups will come together to perform as one monster group on the shores of Currumbin Beach. The target is set at 100 drummers. You can be one of them. It is an amazing experience to be part of such a positive joyful shared performance. (for those who were part of Goodwill Drumming, don’t worry, the parade will be only half an hour – I promise!!)

Amol Palekar has made QUEST that offers a very fast pace, contemporary depiction
of an urban couple's life. Sai and Aditya weave their lives together through
professional pressures, personal confusions, and individual dilemmas. Their
'quest' for finding solutions despite the disillusive reality remains incessant.
Marked by its very well edged screenplay, ace performances and adroit direction,
QUEST has been already selected in many foreign festivals. The Brisbane Film
Festival (Australia) will host the world premier of QUEST on August 5 2006.This
bilingual film (THAANG in Marathi) will be released in India in the month of
August, 2006.
Known for perfect casting for his characters, Palekar is very happy with
performances of MRINAL KULKARNI, RISHI DESHPANDE, SHISHIR SHARMA and VIJAYA MEHTA.
QUEST is the first English film made by him. The story, screenplay and dialogue
are credited to Sandhya Gokhale while Debu Deodhar is the cinematographer.Amol's
last film starred Shahrukh Khan and Rani Mukerji in Paheli(The Riddle) in 2005 was
a huge success.
The film premiere's at Regent Cinema 3 at 5pm followed by a Banquet Indian
Community reception and an interview of the director by Anne Demi-Geroe ,the
Artistic Director of BIFF at 8.30pm.

Melbourne based Japanese drum ensemble Wadaiko Rindo is renowned for energetic and dynamic drumming performances. This Melbourne based Taiko ensemble has performed widely in Victoria, ACT, New Caledonia and Fiji.
Noriko Tadano is a pioneer, starting learning Tsugaru-Shamisen - A three stringed Japanese Lute from the Tsugaru region in the North of Japan - and Minyo - traditional folksong - when she was only 8 years old. She has spread the Shamisen music to Australia and has performed at many events such as the Canberra Multicultural Festival.
Shigeru Yomei Nakajima is a talented, Brisbane based artist who plays Shakuhachi. He has performed at Woodford festival, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, China, Japan and Some of Asia countries.
Zipangu Night is part of the 2006 Australia – Japan Year of Exchange Program and aims to introduce to Australian audiences the Japanese culture and music presented by local Japanese performers from Brisbane and Gold Coast showcasing a sample of musical works that range from traditional to contemporary. During the event you will also enjoy a display of flower arrangements (Ikebana), origami and calligraphy works.

Zipangu Night’ A celebration of the Japanese Culture in Brisbane‘
BEMAC Cultivart series on Friday August 4, will present ‘Zipangu Night’ a unique night of music and performances from Japan featuring Shigeru Yomei Nakajima, Wadaiko Rindo and Noriko Tadano who are bringing the culture and music of Japan to Brisbane.Melbourne based Japanese drum ensemble Wadaiko Rindo is renowned for energetic and dynamic drumming performances. This Melbourne based Taiko ensemble has performed widely in Victoria, ACT, New Caledonia and Fiji.
Noriko Tadano is a pioneer, starting learning Tsugaru-Shamisen - A three stringed Japanese Lute from the Tsugaru region in the North of Japan - and Minyo - traditional folksong - when she was only 8 years old. She has spread the Shamisen music to Australia and has performed at many events such as the Canberra Multicultural Festival.
Shigeru Yomei Nakajima is a talented, Brisbane based artist who plays Shakuhachi. He has performed at Woodford festival, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, China, Japan and Some of Asia countries.
Zipangu Night is part of the 2006 Australia – Japan Year of Exchange Program and aims to introduce to Australian audiences the Japanese culture and music presented by local Japanese performers from Brisbane and Gold Coast showcasing a sample of musical works that range from traditional to contemporary. During the event you will also enjoy a display of flower arrangements (Ikebana), origami and calligraphy works.

At last I've done the second Worldly Women CD and we are launching it on Thursday the 20th of July at the spectacular Spiegeltent which will be in the King George Square for 2 weeks during this year's Brisbane Festival (www.brisbanefestival.com.au) This magnificent Spiegeltent is adorned with more than one thousand mirrors, lead glass and velvet, creating an amazing atmosphere! To top it off, the launch is FREE ENTRY for all and it's not often you get to see this bunch of gals perform for nothing, so please come along and support what promises to be a great night.

I'm writing to let you know that we are bringing our trio qwerty to Brisbane for a rare performance at The Festival Fringe.
Qwerty is one of the most unique and amazing performance projects that I have been involved with and I'd love you to experience it if you haven't already done so. It's a difficult act to "sell" and I've no idea how many people they'll manage to get along, so I thought I'd let you know about it. Please tell your friends.

Qwerty
Qwerty is the amazing improvising wordsmith Peter Rowe with facilitated communication and soaring vocals by Terri Delaney and live looping of WX5 windsyth by Linsey Pollak.
Qwerty is unique. The process that occurs between the three artists is a first in Australia and more than likely a first worldwide. It is performance and musical risk taking in the extreme.
The lyricist, Peter Rowe has minimal verbal communication skills and uses facilitated communication (FC) to communicate with others. FC is a mode of assisted communication using a board with letters, numbers and some words on it, very similar to the set up on a computer keyboard.
It is on this board that Peter writes the lyrics. He improvises completely new songs by pointing to letters on the board that are read by Terri. This is done at breakneck speed that takes considerable practice and rapport. The words that Peter taps out are read and then sung by Terri. (Think about it a bit…….Peter is totally improvising a complete concert of song text, and……as Terri sings the words that Peter writes she is simultaneously reading the next ones). Her melodies are totally improvised in response to the music that Linsey is creating by improvising and “live looping” (playing, recording and building up complex layers of various sounds) using his WX5 (a midi windsynth).
All three artists agree that this is one of the most extraordinary projects that any of them have worked on…..they describe it as a process where the sense of self becomes blurred. The ego is consumed by the necessity of absolute group focus. It is improvisation in its purist form, where each performer must let go of any expectations or preconceptions. There must be no fear when stepping off the edge. It is a process that is undeniably liberating for the three performers.
When qwerty walk on the stage they don’t know where the performance will go. They have no idea of the song content or the musical style, let alone such details as key or time signature. Audiences are certainly taken on quite a journey, sometimes emotional, sometimes funny, sometimes philosophical, often intense and always musically eclectic. It is difficult for some people to accept that it all is being totally created in this way before their eyes and ears. Some people particularly find it difficult to understand and believe the process of Facilitated Communication. However it’s real…….extraordinary, but real
“Qwerty takes us on a journey through improvised words, music and voice that reaches into the soul. Few experiences are as deserving of being labeled 'A MUST' in the entertainment world as qwerty. With sublime aesthetic, playful dynamic and infinite imagination, this ever-ready team of improvisers Challenge the moment, themselves and their audience on the threshold between necessary thought Provocation and pure raw emotion. They have been a catalyst for more tears, laughter,hope and Inspiration than I've ever seen in an audience. The reason is because their work is disarmingly Real in every sense of our perception and its reflection on our existence. It is quite simply evolutionary art."

4 week combined Drum and Dance course with Elliott and Josie.
In Africa drumming and dance are ONE, the rhythm and movement inseparable, the one mirrored in the other. These classes are dedicated to understanding this connection. Half of each class focuses upon the drumming & the other half upon the dance. The music for the dance class is played by Elliott and friends. Participants are encouraged to learn both or may choose to focus on either side of this union.
4 x 2 hour classes over 4 weeks.
Wed nights July 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th.
Culminates in a performance at the July 29th Pulse.

This awesome property gives us 360 degree views of The Tweed Valley Caldera, including magnificent views of : the ‘place of first light’, Wollumbin (Mt Warning), as well as Sphinx Rock, Hanging Rock, The Pinnacle and The Border Rangers.
The weekend will be full of learning from beginners to advanced classes catering for all needs. Story and dance of the rhythms will be shared nightly around the camp fire. George Peel will be on site for any drum repairs and orders.

It would also be great timing as Garikayi is trying to raise money to finish building his house. HARPING ON IN MAPLETON
Popular Victorian harper Andy Rigby returns to the Blackall range on Saturday June 17 to give an evening concert with friends at the historic Mapleton Hall.
Andy’s music encompasses a seductive mix of Paraguayan cross-rhythms, original tunes and Celtic melodies.
Andy’s no stranger to the coast, having played and taught folk harp at numerous Maleny and Woodford festivals and appeared at the Cooroy instrument makers’ exhibition, as well as giving solo concerts and workshops in the area. For the concert he’ll be joined by local harp-player Rebecca Hood, Brisbane fiddler Randall Mathews and percussionist Tunji Beier (of’ Dva’ fame). The four musicians have played together in previous concerts to enthusiastic crowds.
Not only is Andy a great musician, he’s also a well-respected harp maker, having designed and built instruments for harp players throughout Australia and overseas. He plays mostly on a 36-string "Paraceltic" harp of his own
design and making. His visit to the coast this month includes a reunion with ten harpers who made their own harps under his instruction at a workshop held at Maleny High School ten years ago.
Andy’s music is featured on many recordings, most notably on his solo CD, ‘Made and Played’, as well as with ‘Blackwood’ and the harp trio ‘Moving Harps’. He has also recorded with Shakuhachi player Riley Lee, with Dulcimer player Gillian Alcock’ and he’s heard playing the whistle on Rebecca Hood’s Gaelic harp recording ‘Over Nine Waves’.
Andy will also be running a hands-on teaching session from 2pm at the concert venue.

Later I was singularly fortunate to be taken under the wings of Sangeetha Kalanidhi Dr. S. Ramanathan - exemplary musician, esteemed musicologist and extraordinary human being. My musical instincts were further honed by Smt. T. Muktha, of the legendary Brinda-Muktha duo. I owe all my success and achievements till today to these individuals and to the bountiful blessings of my beloved Ambal, the Goddess Kamakshi of Kanchipuram.

The 2006 Festival promises to be a high standard event, with some of the best musicians this country has to offer in not only Jazz but Hip Hop, Latin and other styles that have a jazz influence.
Amongst the stellar line up are Axle Whitehead, presenter of Video Hits on Channel Ten, ( have heard his group are brilliant, so can't wait to see them) the Jackie Orszarczky trio, Badema featuring Moussa Diakite( former guitarist to Salif Keita), Circle of Rhythm (Ben Walsh, Bobby Singh, Greg Sheehan) The Ted Vining trio featuring Bob Sedergreen( one of the hightlights of the festival last year for me), Eric Ajaye (Straight up), George Washingmachine, Darren Percival, The Brand New Sweeties( name is great ..can't wait to see them), Twelve Tone Diamonds (another favourite from last year),Gabrielles fantastic group Hudibrastic Funk, and a group I have heard are absolutely amazing so not to miss.. True Live... and this is only a quarter of the line up!! Oh and I can't wait to see the percussion group that will be put together by Greg Sheehan and Simon Barker (two giants in their field), on the outdoor stage on Sunday.
There will be lots of exciting improvised music and a taste of Australia’s finest up and coming jazz players. Masterclasses and workshops for aspiring musicians and vocalists will also be held over the weekend. Delicious food and drinks will be available. The town will be buzzing.... Get your ticket SOON!! In Africa drumming and dance are ONE, the rhythm and movement inseparable, the one
mirrored in the other. These classes are dedicated to understanding this connection.
Half of each class focuses upon the drumming & the other half upon the dance, as

Description: Hot Zimbabwean dance music on multiple Marimbas!
Jambezi is an effervescent 8-piece Marimba band that was formed by Fatima, a local musician and renowned advocate for African music in Australia. Jambezi’s sense of joy however is underpinned by an incisive rhythmic cohesion that comes only with experience of playing together and a through grounding in tradition.
With 8 Marimbas (wooden xylophones) ranging from soprano, tenor, baritone and bass played by Fatima, Robin Clayfield, Jo Jensen, Steve Pead and Gizelle Lovas, Adrienne Bail and Di Mills - combined with driving rhythms drum kit rhythms, Jambezi plays a range of Jiti (hot Zimbabwean dance music) and traditional Marimba pieces from Zimbabwe and South Africa.

This is an important Major North Indian Hindustani Concert by one of India's finest exponents in the tradition. Rakaji will sing classical and semi- classical forms e.g. Kheyal, Thumri, Dadra and Bhajan. Indian classical music being improvisation based has always stressed on individual artist. But the interplay between artists is also very interesting, given that one would not know what to expect. It is most exciting therefore to hear Rakaji in the second half of the concert perform a Ragamalika Jugalbandi (duet) with Vijaya Visvanathan . Both musicians will provide an integrated presentation of their two systems of music (Hindustani and Carnatic) highlighting
the innate nuances of corresponding melodies and ragas.

Raka Mukherjee - One of India's foremost Classical musician having undergone rigorous years of training by highly esteemed masters of music.
She has a melodious voice, of wide range and power. Clear vision of ragas,and ability to portray them vividly in all their many splendoured details. Farflung flights of musical imagination, lending a special dimension to elaborations and improvisations. A wealth of widely varying expressions, packed with emotion and sentiment but moving always within the boundaries of the discipline and
restraint demanded by our Indian Classical music. A sparkling combination of all the above traits is Raka Mukherjee who has carved out a niche for herself in the musical world, at home and abroad.
Raka is equally adept in all classical and semi- classical forms,e.g. Kheyal, Thumri, Dadra and Bhajan. She especially enjoys creating a devotional spiritual mood in her song. Mastering melody with magical effect she creates a sense of yearning and longing that personally touches the hearts of her western and indian audiences alike.
It is small wonder that such a musician would be hailed by connoisseurs and critics' alike. This is amply reflected in a few excerpts from the many rave reviews she has received.
