Fri 12 Jun Ocean Shores: Vinod Prasanna (bansuri)

Hi folks,

Shen's News: I had a nice show with Jaadu (jazz piano and guitar meets world music in the shape of Asim Gorashi and myself) in the Queen St Mall on Saturday, and then headed up to The Dreaming Festival on Sunday and Monday. I didn't get my camera out so I've not posted anything bloggy. Anyway, the weather was beautiful wasn't it?!

This week I don't have any concerts but wanted to announce Vinod Prasanna's concert in Ocean Shores on Friday. Vinod is a bansuri player from Varanasi, now living in Melbourne - we lived in the same house in Varanasi a few years back! He also has a private show in Brisbane on Saturday, if you're in the know...

As for my own upcoming concerts put June 27 (1st Annual Indian Music Festival) and July 4 (2nd Annual Ashu Babu Memorial Tabla School Concert) in your diary - they look to be memorable events.

IN BRIEF

Both Sangeet and Taro have had successful Australian tours in recent years, but this will be a very special opportunity to hear these two master musicians perform together on these very special instruments, sarangi and bansuri.

Indian classical music is a diamond of global culture, a timeless spiritual vibration with unmatched opportunities for improvisation and expression, tranporting listeners into realms of sound. This tour brings together musicians from India, Japan and Australia to evoke the peaceful sounds of Planet Earth.

Sarangi is an Indian bowed instrument with about 50 strings. Its sound is considered to match the human voice most closely, and its name literally means "hundred colours", reflecting the wide range of tones and moods it can evoke. An extremely difficult instrument, the art of sarangi is slowly dying. The sound is that of ancient spiritual India. Sangeet Mishra comes from a long lineage of sarangi players from India's holiest city, Varanasi, and has performed with leading artists all around India and the world.

Check out Sangeet on Youtube here.

Bansuri is the Indian classical bamboo flute, bringing the sound of air, the mountains, the uplifting devotional mood of Krishna. Master bansuri player Taro Terahara is a leading musician in the thriving Indian classical music community of Japan, well-known from Woodford Folk Festival appearances including New Year's Dawn 2006 and New Year's Midnight 2006/07.

Check out Taro on Youtube here.

No Indian classical performance would be complete without the dynamic drums Tabla, played on this tour by leading Australian tabla player Shen Flindell. Having studied under Varanasi's old master Pt Ashutosh Bhattacharya, Shen comes from the old school of Indian classical music - devoted to the spirit of music and evoking moods of Shiva, Ganesh and Goddess Saraswati.

Check out Shen on Youtube here.

Artist bios and photos are on the Profiles page.

Hi folks,

This is a last minute announcement that Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt & Shashank are performing at Judith Wright Centre on Saturday 21st Feb. If I was in town I'd definitely be there. I've also been informed that Shashank is available for bansuri (flute) lessons while in town this week - click on the link above for details.

Shen's News: I'm having a splendid time here by the banks of the Ganga in Nagwa, south Varanasi. I've had a couple of concerts - one on Munna House with Japanese sitar player Yohei, one yesterday in a school with Kathak dancer Kazumi Nishikawa. I'll be blogging those stories some time soon.... In the meantime, I have posted photos and stories of
Tibet2Timbuk2 and friends at Cafe Checocho and my amazing experience on Saraswati Puja at Guru-ji's. This weekend is a big one in Varanasi. Monday is Mahashivaratri (Shiva's Night) so all weekend there are two big music festivals including the Dhrupad Mela. Santoor player Jimi Miyashita is coming to town on Monday and we will play together in a concert next Friday.

Once again I have Tibet2Timbuk2 news - Lucky Oceans will feature Tibet2Timbuk2's "Music is Life" CD on the Daily Planet, Radio National, this Monday Feb 23 (which also happens to be Mahashivaratri - Shiva's Night). The show is on at 220pm and 1120pm. Please tell your friends.

I have a little news, including my tabla solo for Saraswati Puja, but have yet to blog it, so it'll have to wait til next time.

I'm especially writing now to announce a very special Indian classical sitar home concert this Friday, by Partha Bose. Highly recommended!

Music4children (global music charity)

Music4children is a charity started by musicians to help underprivileged children directly. Disillusioned on how much money was making it to the causes from the big charities they decided to do something to help directly. 100% of public donated money goes directly to the cause and M4C is volunteer based.

M4C broke the world records for the highest gig on Mt Everest and the longest performance of 44 hours non stop and have raised enough money to build an orphanage in Nepal as it's first project. Work is on going and will have children in this year.

This year we take our extreme gigs to the Amazon to play in the most remote and dangerous places on earth. For more info www.music4children.org.

10pm Sat 13 Dec 792kHz: Tibet2Timbuk2 on Weekend Planet

Hi folks,

Shen's News: I've finally caught up on blogging my last couple of gigs:
Tibet2Timbuk2 CD Launch @ Brisbane Powerhouse (lovely photos of a lovely gig) and the BEMAC 21st Anniversary Gala Concert, where I played with my new jazz-world group Jaadu.

I've also been hard at work publicising Tibet2Timbuk2's new CD "Music is Life" recently. The award-winning "Crane Song" is on the latest C-Realm episode - good listen that - which has generated a few downloads in USA. And you can hear Tibet2Timbuk2 on Weekend Planet (ABC Radio National) this Saturday between 10pm-11pm. It's a great CD, so please check it out
at the EthnoSuperLounge Shop. Proceeds go to support Tibetan Children's Village.

This is looking like my last email for the year, so I want to wish you all a very happy festive season, solstice, Christmas, New Year, and so on. I will be with my family in Perth from Dec 17 to Jan 3. No Woodford for me this year - if you're talking to influential people, please tell them they're crazy not to book Tibet2Timbuk2! In January I hope to be giving double lessons to all my students, before I head to India Jan 25 to March 24! :-) Very exciting!!! After that I'm hoping to bring bansuri player Taro Terahara over for the second half of April.

Happy New Year!!!
