Wed 28 May West End: International Hug a Musician Day (World music @ The Forest?)

Hi folks,

Shen's News: We had a really fun Tibet2Timbuk2 gig in Graceville on Saturday night. It really is a great little band, and we've got some good shows in the pipeline over the next few months, starting with a lunchtime concert at BCC in a few weeks (link below).

Facebook tells me that this Wednesday is International Hug a Musician Day. Well, if you don't want to miss out, remember there are a bunch of nice musicians at The Forest (124 Boundary St, West End) every Wednesday! ;-)

Sat 24 May Graceville: Educating Chordden - fundraiser feat. Tibet2Timbuk2

Hi folks,

Shen's News: Last Wednesday's session was really wonderful, as mbira player Fabio Chivhanda was up from Tasmania and joined us for an
mbira session @ Forest. Then on Saturday night I attended and performed in the epic SaReGaMa student concert. (I'm finally back to taking photos again.)

This Saturday I'm playing with Tibet2Timbuk2 at a fundraiser in Graceville. T2T2 has been going really well lately - big things are going to happen this year, I feel.

Wed 18 Jun QPAC - The Anoushka Shankar Project

Posted on behalf of QPAC...

Heralded around the world for her unique style and sound, award-winning sitar player Anoushka Shankar is set to make her Australian and New Zealand debut in June.

Often connected by the media with her father, the legendary sitar virtuoso and composer Ravi Shankar (who inspired The Beatles in the 1960's) and her half-sister, pop starNorah Jones, Anoushka Shankar has shown herself to be a hugely successful artist in her own right.

Schooled in the Indian classical music tradition by her father, Anoushka's unique style of music cleverly fuses classical Indian, electronic and world music, and while her name may have brought her to the stage for the first time as a young girl, it is her talent and vision that have kept her there.

Anoushka has played with some of the world's biggest name artists including George Harrison, Herbie Hancock, Elton John and Sting. She has received critical acclaim throughout the world, received two Grammy nominations and also became the first Indian to perform at the Grammy Awards.

In this, her first Australian tour, Anoushka will be performing classical Indian as well as her own fusion of eastern and western style music from her most recent albums, Rise and Breathing Under Water.

She is joined on stage by a band of leading western and eastern musicians featuring Ravichandra Kulur (Indian flutes and vocals), Tanmoy Bose (tabla and vocals), Leo Dombecki (acoustic piano), Nick Able(tanpura) and Barry Phillips (tanpura and cello).

Hear more about The Anoushka Shankar Project by downloading the video preview.

The second concert in QPAC's Arrive Without Travelling concert series which embraces the rich diversity of global music, The Anoushka Shankar Project is a rare opportunity for world music lovers.

Kind regards

Sat 17 May West End: SaReGaMa School of Indian Music Concert - Rahim Zullah et al

Hi folks,

Shen's News: I will be accompanying Rahim Zullah at his SaReGaMa School of Indian Music Concert in West End this Saturday night. I'm interested to see how his students are going - I believe they will be accompanied by upcoming tabla player Ravikesh. (Look out for my own tabla students' concert later in the year.)

Fri 9 May Bris: Balkan Night!!! Zhiva Voda & The Transbalkan Express

Hi folks,

Shen's News: I really enjoyed Chris Berry's show at Ahimsa House on Friday night - he is a great mbira player with refreshing devotion to ceremony, spirit and community. And I enjoyed the late night post-gig acoustic tabla-mbira jam even more! (Unfortunately Elliott didn't send out the gig info until the last minute, so very sorry to you folks who didn't hear about it.)

I've been rehearsing a bit with Tibet2Timbuk2 lately, so look out for gigs and hopefully a new CD in the coming months, before my Japan trip Aug 21-Nov 17.
