Pulse this Saturday will be very special!! I'm excited!
In order of appearance:
Zormiwasa
(Hausa for "Come play music")
- 3 groups of beautiful people giving this thing called African drumming their best shot. Kicks off with a 20-strong beginners group performing Vakourou, the dance of the Ancestors including a rather lovely song! Then the intermediate group come out and perform Kassa, a harvest rhythm from Guinea, complete with some complex unison soloing. This crew is then joined by the drumming AND DANCING group performing Mamaya, also from Guinea.
EthnoSuperLounge
- this 4-piece will be both sublime and divine, with a whole lot of passion. Shen Flindell, of Bubada Dubada fame(!) and numerous appearances around Brisbane with traditional Indian musicians and dancers is currently on Australian soil. This will be the most awesome opportunity to hear his fantastic tabla playing before he returns, yet again, to India to continue his evolution as a highly respected tabla player. Shen has brought together for the November Pulse Persian musician Cieavash Arean, Marcello Milani and Tibetan musician Tenzin Choegyal. Together they explore their musical styles in a mix that is an upbeat blend of global influences - Tibet, Persia, India, Africa, Jamaica and Australia.
Spankinhide
- Pulse house band Spankinhide are totally ecstatic to now include one Lansana Camara of Guinea, West Africa. Sana (for short) arrived just 2 weeks ago and is here for 6 months. He follows in the wake of his older brother Mohamed Bangoura and performs the music of his people, the Malinke and Susu of Guinea. His magic on the balafon (African xylophone), his delicacy on the kora (African 21-stringed harp) and his insane power on the djembe will quite simply leave you spellbound. Performing together with Spankinhide, Brisbane's most kick-ass drumming ensemble, Sana is ready to fly!!
