Sat Mar 11 Sunnybank - Carnatic Classical Grand Vocal Concert

Posted on behalf of Swara Mohini...

Dear Music Lover,

Swara Mohini Inc. is pleased to announce its first grand vocal concert of 2006. It is a special concert featuring the compositions of one of the most respected trinity composers: Sri Shyama Shastri.

Carnatic Classical Grand Vocal Concert featuring
The Compositions of Sri Shyama Shastri

Sri Shyama Shastri...

Born 26th April 1762 Died 6th February 1827

He was like Goddess Kamakshi's own child. Sri Shyama Shastri's fame as a musician spread widely. Rasikas of music recognised in him a complete musician who combined in his art the three vital limbs of Raga (melody), Bhava (Emotion) and Laya (Rhythm) as a composite whole. His piety, religiosity and spiritual stature were reflected in his personality which evoked respect and reverence in those who came into contact with him. Shyama Shastri was a person of handsome countenance. His mien exuded charm and grace. With the outward religious marks of devotion sparkling on his forehead, and possessing a majestic physical frame and a regal gait, he was the very picture of dignity and nobility. Though unostentatious, he dressed well, adorned appropriate jewellery and was fond of chewing betel, all of which added to his charismatic personality. The citizens of Tanjavur were in awe of him and the culturally conscious among them venerated him as a Maha Purusha.

Shyama Shastri predicted his own end. He passed away, fully conscious till the end, with his son chanting hymns into his ears. The end came on 6th February 1827. His wife had predeceased him by six days.

Sat Feb 25 West End - Pulse feat. Greg Sheehan's Time Travellers

Posted on behalf of Talkin' the Drum...

Lovers of World music!!
Here you go, yet another great Pulse rolls your way!
This month we are very pleased to present Greg Sheehan's latest musical exploration. For those of you unfamiliar with Greg Sheehan, let me simply say that Greg is respected by the musical community as having pioneered many exciting and magical rhythmic phenomena. He is a folk music legend. Bands he has led or played in include 'Coolangubra', 'Utungan Percussion' and more recently 'Skin' and 'The circle of rhythm'. This time he collaborates with 3 other musicians to create "Time Travellers".
"Time Travellers" include Matt Ostilla on yidaki (didgeridoo) and jaws harp, Matt Hill on space bass-banjo (an invention of Steve Langton) and Laura Targett on fiddle. Greg will play percussion and percussed guitar!
There are two other acts this Pulse.
Zormiwasa, made up of Josie and my drumming and dance students, presents as three groups. The first group performs a Zimbabwean rhythm called Jiti, the second group performs another Zimbabwean rhythm called Dine plus a Congolese rhythm called Aossombi. The third group will perform both the drumming and dance for a piece from Burkina Faso called Kluma. Zormiwasa will open the night at around 8pm.
To close Pulse this Saturday is Spankinhide. As an 8-piece we're primed to play a solid set of absolute dance music!! We include myself (Elliott), Oliver Jackson, Derek Swaney, Piers Langford, Charles Wall, Pauly Bromley, Matt Hill and Lansana Camara, or Sana for short. Sana comes from Guinea, West Africa and much of the music we play is derived directly from his culture's rich repertoire. Its a great honour for us to inlcude Sana in our group and we know that you'll enjoy what he brings to an allready pumping rhythm ensemble. Bring your dancing feet!
