Peru the Singing Woman
Friday 23rd March
Maleny Community Centre
730pm $15 + b/f
All ticketing and enquiries: 0438 945 766 www.earth.net.au
It is just over twelve months since her last standing room only performance in Maleny and it still rates among many, as the musical highlight of the year. It was truly an amazing display of talent and a performance that left all who attended entranced by the power of the music of Native American Indian origins.
Peru holds a deep love of creation and opens the voice and the whole body to The Earth Spirit through sacred and ancient women’s chants; breathing and singing into a deep state of union with the Earth. Layers of ancient chants sung in "the mother tongue" - the original language once spoken by all the Earth.
This music touches your mind, opens your heart and feeds your spirit. Songs and chants beautifully sung for the people, for creation and for the earth
Peru will play her only Queensland Show in Maleny on Friday 23rd March 2007 at the Maleny Community Centre 730pm. $15+b/f

SPANISH guitars didn’t exactly go with funky beats the way fish go with chips, however the Tijuana Cartel are showing the world just how good the combo can sound.
In an era where appropriation is worn almost like a badge of honour, this Gold Coast act buck the trend and continue to expand, experiment and draw influence from an ever-widening circle of world and club sounds.
Vocalist and lead guitarist Paul George’s flamenco strings slither over some tastefully broken beats, combined with Carey O’Sullivan’s primo electronic production, and rhythm guitar, have resulted in the bands two albums. First was a self-titled 2003 debut ep, which was featured on triple j's Home and Hosed, and Groove Train, and now their 2005 follow up album Frequent Flyers has evolved.
This new record brings splashes of Middle Eastern vocals to the mix, alongside some lilting Moby-esque soundscapes and get-up-and-dance beatfests - a club-friendly selection without a dull moment.
Tijuana Cartel, introduce a somewhat intelligent and original sound to the ear, bringing flamenco guitar, slide guitar, MCs, percussion, soaring female vocals and scratch DJs to the live forum and their list of shows and residencies proves just how well their beguiling sounds cross boundaries.
Having recently played the the Peats Ridge Festival,a sold out show at Coorabell Hall with OKA and receiving rave reviews up and down the east coast for their contagious dance beats and funky flamenco feel, they return for a final fling performance on this evening of fine friends, dance and southern romance.....

700pm $15 + b/f
Zykado is Tunji Beier – one of Australia’s leading percussionists and Matthias Loebiner - internationally regarded as the world’s best hurdy-gurdy player.
Hurdy-gurdy is a kind of mechanical violin that uses a wheel instead of a bow to play the strings thus enabling an endless note, the instrument is also equipped with melody, buzzing (Trompette), drone and sympathetic strings.
Tunji’s virtuosic rhythms and finger techniques interweave with the unique sounds of Loibner’s hurdy gurdy. Matthias is a master of his instrument, creating moods, which evoke the distant past as well as sounds which are funky and futuristic.
Zydako will be joined by the Hurdy Gurdy Girls who play hurdy gurdies along with flute, piccolo, recorder, oboe and bowed psaltery and have been playing together for five years.
Their music encompasses the haunting melodies of 12th Century Spanish cantigas and the driving rhythms of medieval and traditional English, French, Italian and Celtic dance music as well as original and contemporary compositions written especially for the instrument.

Fri 16 Mar BEMAC - Seasons Dreaming (Chinese)
Posted on behalf of BEMAC...
Touring Australian Multicultural Arts
Friday 16 March 2007 KULTOUR presents ‘Seasons Dreaming’
‘Chinese Classical and Contemporary Music’
The tradition of the East meets the technology of the West in a collaborative concert featuring the traditional wind instruments of China and live computer processing. The concert features internationally acclaimed Chinese composer/musician Wang Zheng Ting and renowned local composer/music technologist, Mark Elliot.
Zheng-Ting Wang makes a tough acoustic cookie of a sound on his Sheng and it retains that quality of wind timbre no matter what kind of intervals are used in the structure.
The Sheng is one of the oldest Chinese musical instruments. The wind instrument existed as far back as 3,000 years ago.
Mark Elliot is currently undertaking a PhD at the Centre for Ideas, Victorian College of the Arts, researching and developing methods for large scale collaboration in conjunction with his artistic compositions.
In late 2003 Mark was awarded an Arts Victoria grant for the composition of a concerto for orchestra and sheng (Chinese mouth organ) which he has now completed and is awaiting its performance early next year.
By virtue of its construction, this is the only Chinese musical instrument in the Chinese orchestra capable of playing up to six notes simultaneously. It is therefore commonly called the "Chinese mouth organ" by western people. Sheng is also the first musical instrument in the world utilising a "coupled acoustical system," between a wind column and a free reed.
This unique collaborative concert is a one of a kind Australian music experience.
Venue: BEMAC Indoor Space, Yungaba 120 Main Street, Kangaroo Point
Time: 8.00pm
Tickets: $16 full Price / $14 concessions / $12 BEMAC members
Bookings: Phone BEMAC on 33914433

DEBUT AUSTRALIAN APPEARANCE FOR 17 INDONESIAN MUSOS
Direct from the heart of the rich Indonesian Sunda culture in Bandung (West Java), the 17 energetic musicians of SambaSunda aren’t afraid to raise a sweat performing their world-renowned brand of eclectic & mesmerising global fusion.
Already festival favourites throughout Europe, SambaSunda have stunned western audiences with their seamless blend of amazing speed-gamelan, thundering Afro djembe and sultry Samba rhythms. SambaSunda features traditional gamelan gongists, ably joined by suling flute, djembe, timbales, violin and more.
Their signature sound is united under the direction and composition of internationally famed multi-instrumentalist, Ismet Ruchimat (collaborator with Talvin Singh and Saba Habas Mustapha).
The fist ever co-presentation between long-time Indonesian music supporters the Judy and the Brisbane Powerhouse, SambaSunda are certain to stun with a not-to-be-missed Australian debut performance in Brisbane before touring on to WOMAD and New Zealand.
Praise for ‘The Sunda Music’:
‘SambaSunda have developed a mature sound that is distinctive and unique… I expect this album to be featured on many critics’ best of the year lists. Highly recommended.”

As cultural diversity increases with media exposure, travel and migration, contemporary societies find themselves with an inspiring mix of new musics and audiences. To cater for the growing desire to learn music from other cultures, Young Conservatorium is developing a world music program, following the model of similar successful initiatives elsewhere in the world. From March, music lovers will be able to study flamenco and Indian classical music. From the second semester of 2007, Indonesian gamelan and African percussion will be added to the program. The World Music Program is being developed in collaboration with Queensland Conservatorium Research Centre and Brisbane’s multicultural arts centre BEMAC.

Sat 24 Feb Tallebudgera - Wild Marmalade & Jabaru
Posted on behalf of Ken Jacob Promos...
Hi Friends,
It gives us great pleasure to present Byron Bay's International Drum and Didgeridoo sensation band Wild Marmalade with support by Jabaru from the Northern Territory Saturday 24th Feb from 7pm at the Tallebudgera Valley Community Hall.
Wild Marmalade have played several times on the Gold Coast before and anybody who has seen them know they totally "GO OFF", get your tickets early to make sure you don't miss out as we are limited to 200 www.moshtix.com.au
Wild Marmalade are an innovative high energy Australian dance trio playing didjeridu, percussion and drums to create totally live organic dance music.
Wild Marmalade is an awesome meeting of three virtuoso players. Their cutting edge sound arises from the conjunction of Si's percussive didjeridu playing with the explosive grooves of the Mat Ledgar and Matt Goodwin rhythm section. This is original Australian dance music at its wildest.
Using only acoustic instruments, without any effects or samples, Wild Marmalade meld the ancient sounds of the didjeridu with contemporary techno rhythms to create fresh vibrant dance music characterised by blitzing tempos and tasty grooves.
Drawing on rhythms from all over the world and inspired by both indigenous sounds and the grooves of the present, Wild Marmalade's high energy shows uplift audiences with their display of powerful, joyous and infectiously danceable music.
Wild Marmalade have been creating waves across the globe. Last year they played their second tour of Japan, rocking festivals, concert halls, huge outdoor raves and ancient shrines. Earlier in the year they toured extensively through Europe, playing events in Ibiza, Switzerland, Italy, France, Canada, Austria and at the Edinburgh festival. Wild Marmalade have just blitzed the recent Woodford Folk Festival and Exodus Live Festival to kick start 2007, now it's your turn at the awesome Tally Valley Hall venue. Check em out at: www.myspace.com/wildmarmalade www.wildmarmalade.com
Support act: JABARU
Nothing is more energizing, inspiring, spiritually uplifing and musically refreshing than Jabaru's performance. Jabaru's music is a uniquie collaboration of world music themes.
Through a wild web of tribal rhythms of congas, djembes, darabuka and electronic drums Jabaru fuse together ancient sounds of didgeridoo, medieval melodies of dulcimer, deep earth songs and chant and a range of different flutes from around the world.
They bring to music an ancient and sacred spirit of the land uniquely integrating ethnic, folk and tribal with technology. As you listen to Jabaru you will find that they demonstrate a deep and abiding respect for all nations, all tribes, all religions and our planet and it's people, without regard for their colour, creed or nationality. www.jabaru.com.au

Feb 21/22 West End - Drum/Dance courses start
Posted on behalf of Talkin' the Drum...
6 week beginners drum course and 6 week dance course
We're structuring the drum/dance course thang differently this year. Its time for Josie to do a dedicated dance course. So rather than doing the drum and dance as one course we're holding them back to back on the same evening. For the drummers out there, I want to tell you that learning the dance is incredible for improving your drumming. Also, I believe that when we talk about the 'healing power of the drum' it actually largely refers to the healing power of dance, that good drumming allows people to dance in a way that helps shed layers of resistance and blockage. Having said that I certainly want to add that playing rhythm is also very good for one's state of being, it can be very healing on subtle levels.
6 x 1&1/2 hour classes drumming or dance.
Wed nights Feb 21st, 28th, Mar 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th.
Drumming 7pm to 8.30pm.
Dance 8.30pm to 10pm.
Venue: AHIMSA house, 26 Horan St. West End.
Cost is $100 for either the drum or the dance course or $150 for both drum and dance courses. Casually, which is ok at the beginning of courses, cost $20 per class or if doing both on one occasion $30.
Drums are available for hire and sale.
Contact Elliott 0407 372 554 or Josie 0400 762 522
5 week intermediate drum course
These classes are open to drummers with significant experience in African drumming, particularly on the djembe. Can you get a tone and a slap? Or are you playing sloans and taps!!?!!
5 x 2 hour classes.
Thu nights Feb 22nd, Mar 1st, 15th, 22nd and 29th.
7.30pm – 9.30pm
Venue: Ahimsa House, 26 Horan St. West End.
Cost is $85 for the course or $20 casually.
