Hi folks,

Shen's News: I had a big week after getting back from India - first up a wonderful concert with Jai Uttal in Byron, and then I ended up playing 3 times at the Melting Pot Festival on Saturday and once more on Sunday!  Tibet2Timbuk2 will be at Melting Pot Festival again next month.

I will be accompanying accomplished vocalist Saniya Patankar twice this weekend - on Friday evening at the Brisbane Hindu Temple and then on Saturday morning at a private function.  Please contact me if you'd like to attend the morning sitting.  
I'll also give special mention to Mysore Brothers, a famous violin duo performing at Judith Wright Centre tomorrow night.  And watch out for brilliant North Indian violinist Kala Ramnath and tabla master Yogesh Samsi on March 14 - you can book tickets at the EthnoSuperLounge Shop at absolute bargain prices.

Hi folks,

Shen's News: Yes I'm back from 2 months in India!  It was freezing cold almost the whole time I was there, but then I heard I missed some very hot days here - out of the frying pan and into the fridge...  I've written a whole lot of blogs and posted a bunch of beautiful photos.  All the blogs are listed individually below, or you can just visit my main blog page and skim through.  And if you're on Facebook, all the photos are there too.
I actually came back a couple of weeks earlier than planned because I have a very special concert in Byron this Thursday with great kirtan singer, Jai Uttal, on his first visit to Australia.  It's a great honour for me and I'm very much looking forward to it.  At 4pm Saturday I'll also be playing with Tibet2Timbuk2 at QPAC in a free event featuring a whole bunch of great Brisbane Indian and Tibetan musicians.

Nov 20/21: Two Tibet2Timbuk2 shows

Hi folks,

Shen's News: I'm a bit late this week in informing you that Tibet2Timbuk2 have two concerts this weekend. On Friday we are playing last at BEMAC: World by Night, the final event ever at long-time BEMAC home Yungaba. Then on Saturday we are playing earlyish (maybe first) at ‘An Evening of Spiritual Song’ at the Old Brisbane Museum. These will be our last shows for a few months as I'm going to India from Nov 28 until Feb 15. Hope to see you this weekend!

Shen's News: This weekend I have 3 concerts with fantastic vocal/sitar duo Debapriya-Samanwaya in Bangalow (Fri), St Lucia (Sat) and Mudjimba (Sun). Shen's News: Last days in Japan, such a wonderful time. In the last few days I was blessed to accompany Steve Oda, 35 years' sarod student of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, twice. Blogs coming soon, I promise. From previous weeks, I've posted photos and stories about Tenzin's tour of Japan: parts 1, 2 and 3, plus Gifu Sangeet Mela 2009.

I'll be back in Brisbane on Thursday morning and have some very nice concerts ahead. On Sunday I'll be playing twice at Qld Multicultural Festival, with Saikat Bhattacharya at the Ceremonial Stage at 4.20pm and then immediately after that with Tibet2Timbuk2 on the Lake Stage at 5.10pm. Then the following weekend I have 3 concerts with fantastic vocal/sitar duo Debapriya-Samanwaya in Bangalow, St Lucia and Mudjimba (Sunshine Coast). "Tenzin in Japan" photos on Facebook plus upcoming events

Hi folks,

Shen's News: Well, Tenzin has come and gone and Japan will never be the same again. :-) Slight exaggeration, but we had a really great time and he made a huge impression on everyone who came to our shows. It was a really great experience for me to be play with Tenzin almost every day for a week, and along with bansuri player Taro Terahara we developed a really tight act. As usual I'm a bit slow on the blogs, but in the meantime you can see "Tenzin in Japan" photos on Facebook.

I have one more round of shows in Tokyo this week, and then it's back home in time for Qld Multicultural Festival on Oct 18, where I'll be playing with Tibet2Timbuk2, Saikat Bhattacharya and possibly another show yet to be confirmed. The following weekend I'll be accompanying brilliant Indian classical vocal/sitar duo Debapriya/Samanwaya in Bangalow on the 23rd. My arrangements for concerts on the 24th and 25th have fallen through, so I'm looking for home concert venues on those dates. Please contact me if you have any ideas.

Sun 27 Sep Milton: "A Musical Evening with Mitron"

Hi folks,

Shen's News: Writing to you this week from Kamakura, having just completed the Nagoya/Kyoto leg of my Japan tour. It's been slow the last few weeks, but tomorrow I start an intense period of 15 concerts in 19 days, including a bunch around Tokyo with Tenzin Choegyal who's arriving here on Thursday. Very exciting!!!

I've got some good shows coming up when I get back to Australia, too. Both Tibet2Timbuk2 and Saikat Bhattacharya (with Shen) will be playing at the Qld Multicultural Festival on Oct 18. The following weekend I'll be accompanying brilliant Indian classical vocal/sitar duo Debapriya/Samanwaya at Bangalow (23rd), Gold Coast (24th) and Brisbane (25th). Shen's News: Writing to you from the Greenhouse in Chichibu, Japan, where it's hot and sticky and we're getting ready for a party/jam session this weekend. I'll be off to Nagoya and Kyoto next week, before returning to Tokyo for a series of concerts with Tenzin.

There's a very special concert in Brisbane this week. Following the performance with my tabla students at Krishna Fest a couple of weekends back, the lads are doing it without me 6pm this Saturday night at Brisbane Music Circle in Garden City Library. Hi folks,

Shen's News: I've posted a couple of photos of my gig with Marcello at "Sing it Up for Sabina" last weekend. It was a highly successful event, raising $4000 for a permaculture project in Uganda. Goodonya Miss Jayne!

This weekend you can hear me and my top tabla students giving a tabla performance at the Krishna Fest at Roma St Parklands, just after 4pm. Sorry I don't have exact details at this stage, but anyway we hope to see you there.

Hi folks,

Shen's News: Last weekend I performed in the opening event of Brisbane Music Circle, an informal organisation fostering Indian classical music by amateur and professional artists. I accompanied Carnatic singer Divyasri Shashidhar and closed the night with a short tabla solo.

This weekend I'll be playing with Tibet2Timbuk2 bandmate Marcello at Sing It Up For Sabina!, also featuring Spankinhide, Lansana Camara, Mbira Myoyo, and many more. Marcello and I will be leading a finale jam session featuring the day's artists. The event is "a fundraiser to support the Food and Water Security
Project at Sabina Primary School and Orphanage in Southern Uganda where a permaculture design is
being implemented to produce food and fuel for the 300 children living onsite."

Shen's News: The 2nd Annual Ashu Babu Memorial Tabla School Concert on July 4 was a big success, with lots of love all around. Please follow the link for pics and full story. Last Sunday I played at Cows at the Beach with Toby Wren at Ric's Bar in the Valley, a very enjoyable Indo-jazz collaboration and hopefully the first of many. Hi folks,

Shen's News: A few blogs of recent activities this week - some snaps of the bonfire at Winter Solstice Festival,
Feridun's Sunday afternoon world music sessions, and last but by no means least, a full rundown on last Saturday's 1st Annual Brisbane Indian Music Festival! It was a great event.

This Saturday my students and I are all very excited about the 2nd Annual Ashu Babu Memorial Tabla School Concert to be held in Progress Hall, Mt Gravatt from 6pm to 9pm. You'll be able to hear all my best students from ages 8 to 50+ doing their thing, as well as my own full-length tabla solo.

I'm pretty sure Elliott has a Pulse that night too, but he hasn't added the details to my calendar yet. If you're percussion-mad, you can come to both! :-)

Sat 27 Jun West End: 1st Annual Indian Music Festival

Hi folks,

Shen's News: I hope to see you at the 1st Annual Indian Music Festival in Ahimsa House, West End this Saturday. I'll be accompanying my girlfriend Yuki's dhrupad singing some time around 5pm, then later in the night I'll be doing a tabla solo (accompanied by Yuki on harmonium) and also accompanying Saikat Bhattacharya (sitar) and Rahim Zullah (vocal). There will be many more performances including Kathak dance so don't miss out. I hope that this event will flower and grow over the years.
