4ZZZ Market Day 2006

Saturday October 21st

Brisbane's most unique independent broadcaster 4ZZZ 102.1fm have officially announced Market Day Festival 2006 @ The RNA Showgrounds - Saturday October 21st.

In lieu of their 30th birthday celebrations this year's 4ZZZ Market Day Festival 06 is gearing up to blitz all predecessors; with over 50 international, interstate and local bands performing, if you've never born witness to a Market Day - your time is now nigh.

The legendary 4ZZZ Market Day Festival is renowned for diverse music acts from a broad range of genres + market stalls, visuals and performance art. In addition to the acts already announced (see below) 4ZZZ have just released another round of artists confirmed for the Market Day 06 bill,
namely:

CurseovDialect: With a live show that combines unrelenting energy, fine tuned execution, and jaw dropping costumes to create a one-of-a-kind concert experience that tears the hip-hop rulebook to pieces, a diverse range of backgrounds (Maltese, Macedonian, Indian, Maori, and Pakistani) means Melbourne's CurseovDialect come off as a non-homogenized tapestry of Australian culture. Their razor sharp political raps, unique flows, and standout production accurately represents their knowledge of hip-hop as world music and the multi-cultural climate of their homeland.

Giants Of Science - Homespun groove-rock heavyweight heroes Giants Of Science are a Brisbane institution. Hand-picked by Maynard James Keenan to tour with A Perfect Circle on their last Australian tour; ten years, two albums and tour's with Powderfinger and Radio Birdman have made GOS one of the best live rock and roll shows of any Australian band treading the boards
today, full stop.

The Disables: On the road this month supporting Boston street punks The Unseen, Brisbane's own perpetrators of unsated angst play both kinds of music; energetic and furious.

Already announced to perform at Market Day 06 this year are:
* Internationally acclaimed, Californian based electronic / jungle / hip hop phenomenon; KID 606
* Breakcore, lo-fi synthpop maestro; Talkshow Boy,
* Brisbanes own metalcore captains; The Dreamkillers,

Fri 6 Oct BEMAC - "Made in India"

Posted on behalf of BEMAC...

BEMAC Cultivart 'MADE IN INDIA'
FRIDAY 6 October 2006 - 8.00pm

A gifted Veena player, a renowned percussionist, a sophisticated sitar artist, and an experienced vocalist will render the audience speechless at the Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre (BEMAC) Cultivart event 'Made in India' on Friday 6 October 2006.

As part of its Cultivart series 2006, BEMAC presents four brilliant Brisbane-based artists, all with different musical experiences nonetheless united by one element - their passion for true Indian music.

Let loose with Rajyashree Josyer Shrikanth as she shows how a national instrument - the Veena - is skillfully played in delightful Gayaki (vocalist) style.

The plucked string instrument, central to Carnatic (South Indian) music, will be jovially joined by another prestigious instrument, the Tabla, commanded by Master Tabla Dheeraj Shrestha.

A professional musician and passionate teacher, Dheeraj Shrestha ha sestablished a global profile as India's renowned Tabla player and Australia's leading Indian percussionist, having toured countries such as UK, Canada, USA and Southeast Asia and performed locally including SydneyArts Festival, Port Fairy and Woodford Folk Festival.

Music has always occupied a central place in the imagination of Indians but it is even more fascinating when a foreigner takes interest in a traditional Indian instrument such as a sitar.

Huib Schippers, currently directing the Queensland Conservatorium Research Centre at Griffith University, belongs to the first generation of western sitar players to perform in India, learning from world-renowned Ali Akbar Khan, regarded by many as the most impressive Indian instrumentalist of the twentieth century.

Rahim Zullah, though born in the foreign land of Fiji, is not so foreign to Indian Classical music. Coming from a family of Indian music lovers, Rahim has given several solo and group performances through local and international multicultural festivals and concerts, cleverly using his voiceto share his rich heritage and culture.

Tickets are sold at $16 full price - concession and member discounts available. For bookings, phone BEMAC on (07) 3391 4433.

THE MAGIC HOUR is two extraordinary classical Indian dancers at the Byron Bay Community Centre Theatre on Sat 30th September 7pm.

The male dancer ARJUN RAINA will use Kathakali, a classical dance theatre with elaborate make-up and costume. This form comes from traditions of dancing deities whose roots go back to traditions of trance and possession. He uses hand gestures (mudras) to enact words and to convey feelings through formalized 9 basic emotions.

It is the most spectacular of India’s 6 classical dance forms.

MONICA SINGH runs an Art and Healing Centre in Delhi where students are trained in Classical Arts. She will perform the ancient dance style of Orissi which was originally performed by Maharis or temple dancers. Its themes are from the love story of Lord Krishna and Radha, celebrated in the famous poem Gita Govinda by the poet Jaya Deva.

Both artists are revered world wide.

Ken Jacob presents
OKA - A fusion of Organic World Sounds

Saturday 30th Sept 7pm – 11pm
Tallebudgera Valley Community Centre

Australian band Oka have been together since 2002 and their music has progressed as quickly as their grass roots following.

In 2002 they started out with their debut album ‘Elements’, a soulfully rhythmic ode to chilled beats and luscious melodies overlaying the Yidaki (didgeridoo) at its heart. Then in 2003 they followed it up with ‘One Talk’, a more eclectic album traditionally and progressively. Now they’re touring on the back of their funkiest LP, ‘Music Makes Me Happy’.

Since its release Music Makes Me Happy has become the peoples choice. Tested on their tour of Canada in 2005, it’s now seeing Triple J airplay, Rage coverage and a groundswell of Australian support on the back of a successful summer festival stint including, Woodford Folk Festival, Bellingen Global Carnival, Joyfest, Surfing The Coldstream, and Exodus.

“Music Makes Me Happy” has its roots on the road. Recorded and mixed in various locales around their Sunshine Coast base, the guys went where it felt right. This included Stu’s Island Time Gallery or his home studio and the back of Chris’ Kombi camper, overlooking various surf breaks. The final mix done while watching the waves of the Pacific hit the coast.

DidgeriStu, Matt Aitchison and Chris Lane are Oka. Stu brings to the mix his Islander Aboriginal culture, the Yidaki/didgeridoo, and his love of decks and beats, Matt, his passion for drumming and nightclub keys and Chris his Eastern travels, flutes, sax and slide guitar. The fusion created pushes musical boundaries, and what happens on the night will rock your body and move your soul for sure.

Sat 30 Sep Maleny - Peru the Singing Woman Women’s Ecstatic Healing Chants Workshop

Posted on behalf of The Art of Mother Earth...

The Art of Mother Earth proudly presents:-

Peru the Singing Woman Women’s Ecstatic Healing Chants Workshop. $50.00

Saturday 30 September WorldView Centre, Maleny Montville Road, Maleny 630pm - 1000pm

Workshop for Women -

This workshop is to teach women to open the voice and the whole body to The Earth Spirit through sacred and ancient women’s chants; to breathe and sing into a deep state of union or love making with The Earth. Peru is a New Zealand based Performer/Teacher. Although originally trained in Jazz her deep commitment and apprenticing a native elder, brought her into the songs of the mother and opened her to the voice of the earth.

No previous singing experience required.

Reservations are essential:- Telephone: 0754 999 579 or Email maleny@tpg.com.au

Please pass onto any likeminded friends who you think would appreciate an evening with this very talented woman.

Peruquois Frances has a talent for singing. It was this talent that would take her to the forefront of the Sydney Jazz scene.
Yet she became weary of singing about the struggles and sadness of the human spirit and wanted to heal the people's pain instead of just singing about it.

She then met her teacher, a traditional Native American Elder John Twobirds who taught her to awaken her ancestral memory and the ancient ways of earth singing and chanting. She studied and travelled the world with him for 10 years

New Mexico became a spiritual home for her because it was there she truly learned to listen to the song of the land. The "Vision Quest" ceremony in the Apache mountains led her to deepen her connection with the earth mother and source her sound, resonance and chants.

She was shown the importance music plays in bringing people together, for entertainment, but also for healing and as a vital part in the rituals and ceremonies. Keeping alive the history and stories of the earth and humanity.

Peru holds a deep love of creation and opens the voice and the whole body to The Earth Spirit through sacred and ancient women’s chants; breathing and singing into a deep state of union with the Earth. Layers of ancient chants sung in "the mother tongue" - the original language once spoken by all the Earth.

This music touches your mind, opens your heart and feeds your spirit. Songs and chants beautifully sung for the people, for creation and for the earth

Kind regards

Fri 8 Sep BEMAC - Africanissimo

Posted on behalf of BEMAC...

BEMAC Cultivart Series 2006 Presents
‘AFRICANISSIMO’

FRIDAY 8 SEPTEMBER 2006 - 8.00pm

BEMAC Venue, Yungaba, 120 Main Street, Kangaroo Point

Experience the evolving expression of African music

Powerful sounds of thundering drums and vibrant dance moves are just some of the things to expect in this BEMAC Cultivart event ‘Africanissimo’ to be held this 8th of September at Yungaba, Kangaroo Point.

With astonishing African youth performances presented through the Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre (BEMAC) Cultivart Series, the Friday night event will feature a fusion of traditional and contemporary acts from a variety of African regions including Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Sudan.

Acholi Women and Youth Bwola Dancers will present traditional Sudanese Laraka and Bwola dances ultimately depicting an idyllic African community gathering, while the Nigusse sisters show how Ethiopians eclectically jive to the rhythm of Bahil (tradition) dances and Afro-hip hop music.

Story-telling rap group F-Squad will instigate further festivity as they bring hip hop back to its roots of peace, unity, freedom, and hope – important values still direly needed in today’s society.

Topping it all off with an integration project, the Kwatamaja Dance Squad will emotively impart the story of the historically-oppressed Congolese people’s ongoing struggle through rhythmic beats and electrifying dance.

Overall, Africanissimo endeavors to express, influence, and portray the African way of life through mediums of sight, rhythm, and sound.

Tickets are sold at $16 full price – concession and BEMAC member discounts available. For bookings, phone BEMAC on (07) 33914433.

Sat 26 Aug West End - Pulse feat. Tribalicious & Papasa

Posted on behalf of Talkin' the Drum...

Pulse
This Pulse is a powerful coming together of the two African dance troupes in Brisbane! This is a Pulse not to be missed!

Talkin' the Drum takes great pleasure in presenting:

Papasa
Papasa is an exciting blend of dance, rhythm & soul of 3 quite diverse African traditions – Ghana, Kenya & Ethiopia. Formed by Ghanaian drummer & dancer Nii Armah & Kenyan singer & dancer Sam Okoth, this African group has a rare & earthy African feel. Musically & in dance, Papasa has a broad dynamic range - from the gentle & soulful syncopated rhythms of the Kenyan ‘Nyatiti’ to the explosive poly-rhythms of Ghana.

Tribalicious
Tribalicious is a fantastically vibrant 11-piece African drum & dance troupe. They perform the full power rhythms & dances of West Africa with such exuberance that you’ll find the word ‘Tribalicious’ as the Oxford dictionary definition for ‘high energy’!! Backed up by a totally rocking rhythm section the Tribalicious dancers capture the attention of any audience, leaving them enlivened and inspired.

This Pulse Tribalicious & Papasa weave together their individual dances & songs, as well as performing as one big fantastic mega-group, strengthening the healthy bonds existing within the Brisbane African drum & dance community. And for all you crazy dancers out there, have no fear, there will be plenty of pumping music dedicated to your dancing feet!!

Zormiwasa
African rhythms by many hands! The night opens at 8pm with an exciting performance by many positive people working with Elliott on a rhythm called Abodan that they are developing to perform at the Trails of Light parade presented by Woodford Theatre Company on Sept 24th Currumbin Beach.

Saturday Aug 26th
Doors open 7pm
